The West Coast DHB offers all the diversity, challenge and boundary blurring of practicing rural medicine.
Rural Hospital Medicine is a relatively new specialty in New Zealand.  It specialises in developing the generalist skills needed for small provincial and rural hospitals. You get a fantastic opportunity to practice a breadth of medical skills.

Our General Practitionersprovide high quality primary care services from 13 different locations (the WCDHB own 4 general practices with a number of rural clinics on the Coast).   The DHB’s ownership of primary care services has allowed it to begin to develop true interdisciplinary teams in primary care and to integrate traditional general practice services with community services and, in some cases, inpatient care.

There is also an option to work across both primary care and the hospitalsetting – developing an even broader range of medical knowledge.

Of course we welcome specialists too!  We have close links with the Canterbury DHB as part of a trans-alpine health service.  The Coast leads the way nationally reducing isolation through the better use of technology - video-conferencing is used in managing patients as well as providing medical education and collegial support.

Our partnership with Canterbury DHB (the second largest DHB in NZ) gives support, professional development and you can have planned time in Christchurch to maintain your sub-specialty interest.

It's an exciting time to be working on the Coast - with new facilities, the development of integrated family health centres and moving towards truly being a patient centred health service - we are always looking at how we can improve service provision in a rural setting.

You are part of the community and are truly appreciated for contributing to the overall wellness of the community.

We have strong links with the University of Otagothrough the Rural Medical Immersion Programme, and are involved in regional (South Island wide) initiatives like the oncology specialist multidisciplinary meeting - a regular videoconference involving a range of health professionals with expertise in the diagnosis and management of cancer.
